Here is the setting: A group of musicians on a rooftop in Paris admist the traffic and casual movements of the Paris lifestyle. Femi Kuti with a gentle smile on his bronze brow and his rhythm sections and singers all form a circle around him. A minute later, they burst out into a song. A chant of ‘Africa For Africa’ as a call to the African culture to seek equanimtiy to its chaotic state.
I’m a brown skinned with a mix of ancestral blood in my genetic make up. MOst would assume this song is geared toward me. Don’t assume. I’m not from Africa, I won’t claim myself as such, Furthermore, Mr. Moon set up this scene on a rooftop for a reason. It reminds of the title to a Godspeed You Black Emperor double CD “Lift Your Fist To the Heavens Like Antennas,” Femi Kuti wants to be this serene revolting antenna to nirvana shrieking for some sort of spiritual resolve to the crisis that exist in Africa at that moment.
Femi Kuti‘s “Chants to the Heavens Like Spears and Arrows.” represents a siren to the many Africans all over the world, specifically in Africa, to bring peace to one another as a culture and people. Africa has so much peril from decade to decade whether it be war, famine or political unrest (or all three at once for that matter). As much I love this video, this song and the spirit of these musicians; I ask myself: are we seeking peace or are we seeking comfort in the idea? Procrasnation rears an ugly taste to the sense of elucidation.
The videos below are Femi Kuti Take Away Shows recordings filmed in Paris by Vincent Moon. This video is quiet, cumbersome, meditation of musical majestry. Never in my life have i seen a performance so sincere and intimate. i only wish there doves gliding in the nirvana above. I believe the message is clear in these two videos: peaceful resistance to tranquil existence. Enjoy the videos and the songs of revert-composed unrest.
